The International BioIron Society (IBIS) is the premier world organization for researchers and clinicians interested in iron metabolism. BioIron meetings are held every two years at different locations around the world and generally attract more than 300 attendees.

The Food Science and Human Nutrition department is honored to announce that Mitchell Knutson, Ph.D. has been named a 2009 ILSI North America Future Leader in Nutritional Sciences. This is one of the most important accomplishments a nutritional scientist can achieve in the early stages of their career. Dr. Knutson received the award, in part for his outstanding research accomplishments related to the study of iron transport. Additionally, Mitch has served the American Society for Nutrition and East Coast Iron Club as committee chairs.
ILSI N.A. is a nonprofit, scientific research and educational organization established to advance the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition and food safety by bringing together scientists from academia, government, industry, and the public sector to solve problems with broad implications for the well-being of the general public. ILSI N.A.’s programs are financially supported primarily by its industry membership.
The ILSI NA Future Leader Award, given to promising nutrition and food scientists, allows new investigators the opportunity to add to an existing project or to conduct exploratory research that might not receive funding from other sources or add to an existing project. The UF FSHN department has one of the largest cohorts of former ILSI Future Leaders including Drs. Cousins,Gregory, Borum, Percival, Shay, and Henken.
